OPI: New York City Ballet Soft Shades Review & Swatches

Good morning, readers.
I hope you all had a fun and safe weekend! :)

Today, I have the new OPI New York City Ballet Soft Shades to show you. As usual, there's quite a bit to cover, so let's get started!

Note: It may seem like each color looks exactly the same, but in person, each nail polish is the exact color as the bottle. In other words, what you see in the bottle is what you will achieve on your nails. Also, they all apply very sheer and need at least 3-4 coats for opacity. Just wanted to let you all know! :)

Don't Touch My TuTu!, Barre My Soul, You Callin' Me a Lyre?, Care to Danse?, My Pointe Exactly, and Pirouette My Whistle

Don't Touch My Tutu!

First up, we have Don't Touch My Tutu! The best way I can describe this color to you all is, if you were to take low fat milk and dilute it with water. That's basically what you'd get! As stated above in red, all colors from this collection are very sheer needing 3-4 coats for opacity. The above image was 3 coats.

Barre My Soul

Next up, Barre My Soul. It's very similar to DTMT, but with the slightest touch of beige added. This was 3 coats. It's your basic sheer, beige and that's the "naked truth"! ;)

 You Callin' Me a Lyre?

You Callin' Me a Lyre? is a sheer, soft pink. If you love french manicures with a light pink top coat, you probably want to add this to your stash! This was 3 coats.

Care to Danse?

Next we have, Care to Danse? It's a sheer base with a touch of lilac. This color has made its way onto my top three picks from this collection. I own tons of lilacs, but not a single, sheer beauty like this baby! Like I said before, you really need to see these colors in person to have a better perspective! The best tip I can give you is to take a good look at each bottle because that's what you'd get. This was 3 coats.

My Pointe Exactly

This beauty is another color that has landed into my top three picks! Again, I own many grey nail polisher, but nothing like this! My Pointe Exactly is a sheer base with a hint of grey. It has a jelly finish which I LOVE! This was 3 coats, but I probably would prefer to  wear this color completely opaque. #Love

Pirouette My Whistle

Last, but most certainly not least, is Pirouette My Whistle. This glitter is really something else! It's a clear base infused with silver micro shimmers and silver matte, yes matte, hex glitters. When I first saw the hex glitters, I immediately thought of the inside of an oyster shell. You guys are probably thinking, oyster shells? Really Carla?! LOL! I can't really put in words. -_- The only downside is that the hex glitters are a bit tricky to load onto the brush and I found myself fishing in the bottle for them. Nonetheless, this has got to be one of the greatest glitters IMO! This was 2 coats.

1 coat of Pirouette My Whistle over 3 coats of My Pointe Exactly

The Good
-Non-streaky!
-Clean and natural
-Delicate, soft, and subtle
-Flattering on any skintone

-Perfect as a top layer for french manis
-Entire collection is very work appropriate
-Extremely glossy and Top Coat optional
-Can be used as a 1 coater to acheive a glossy look on the nail

The Not So Good
Being that these are called soft shades,(and they weren't lying) you will definitely need at least 3-4 coats or maybe even more depending on your liking of opacity. Like I've said in the past, I'm not a huge fan of nail polishes that require more than 3 coats, but if it's worth the effort, I'll put in the extra work. This collection is the perfect example all around! :)

Care to Danse?, My Pointe Exactly, and Pirouette My Whistle

As always, hope this helps & happy shopping!

  2. Since I find OPI press release images to be so [NOT]helpful, lol... I wasn't sure what to expect from these. Yours are the first swatches I've seen and they look really pretty! My top picks are definitely leaning towards the three you chose. :)

  8. Shades are lovely and here I don't mind that they are not totally opaque. I'm weird, I know. ;D They make your nails look really feminine and delicate! But one of them would be enough for me, because they look really similar, probably Don't Touch My TuTu! or maybe Barre My Soul. Oh, and I need glitter one as well! ;D Thank you for swatches like this, I always like to see photos of whole collections. Even if I don't have time to comment, I always "rest my eyes" on your lovely photos. ;)

  13. Great photos of your swatches! I have not been excited over a soft shade collection in years - probably since they first started putting out a couple years at the first when they were bridal collections and we were all enamored with Fr. and Am manis. My favs in this collection are also the same as yours Carla! Cannot wait to get them - and 2 bottles of the sparkle topper!

    1. For coats, but worth the extra effort IMO. I know where you're coming from tho, I'm not a huge fan of 3+ coaters, but this collection is an exception!

  16. These all look super pretty, but they're just not the kind of colours I see myself wearing. Your swatches are lovely though :)

  17. beautiful collection and beautiful hands!! loved the glitter ones! :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Personally, I'm not a fan of super sheer polishes, so I'll be skipping these. I do like Pirouette My Whistle, though! I think it'd make a lovely topcoat!

  19. These are all really pretty but too sheer for me!

  22. I think the colors are very light maybe to a french manicure will be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They'd be great for a french manicure. Only one I don't like is 'My pointe exactly' idk, it's just not my thing :/ Great swatches!

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's a shame they are so sheer :( Good for french manicure otherwise useless :-/ I know I won't be purchasing any of the polishes, I like bold colours x

  25. Hmm... these are definitely not what I expected... I hadn't looked too closely at this collection yet, but just assumed they were creams. I guess at least they are doing something different then the basic spring collection with the light, pastel creams. On the other hand... I just can't see myself getting all that interested in any of these... I also still haven't quite figured out jelly application, so maybe if I had that down better I would warm up to these a bit more! =) I would definitely say that if I had to choose I would probably agree with your top three! Pirouette My Whistle and My Pointe Exactly being in the top 2. Would Pirouette My Whistle be good to use in a "jelly sandwich" type look? My next goal with the jelly polishes I already have is go the jelly sandwich route, I feel like that might get me on board with them a bit more!

    Thanks for the great swatches!

  36. I really don't see myself purchasing any of these shades except for Pirouette My Whistle. But in all honesty I would rather spend my money on something I really really want. Thank you for doing the review though. They are really pretty colors, just not my style. I like the loud vibrant colors they have now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love the purple, a bit sad it's so sheer. :(

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm typically not super into pale colors or pastels, but I like these. The names are hilarious too. Totally loving that semi-subtle glitter in the last bit of the post!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Lindas as cores dos esmaltes OPI! Pena que no Brasil eles sejam tão caros... mas as cores estão lindas!

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is definitely a delicate and feminine collection, although I'm usually not too fond of sheer shades. The layering of Pirouette My Whistle over My Pointe Exactly looks beautiful ^^

    ReplyDelete
  52. all the colors are so nice!) but it's difficult to choose only a few, and i definitely don't need all of them

    ReplyDelete
  53. unfortunately too sheer for me and my nails :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm not a fan of that kind of sheer polish but I mus admit they create a very neat look. I might get the purple one :) Also love Pirouette my Whistle a lot :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I wasn't really getting these until I saw your last picture batch--1 coat of Pirouette My Whistle over 3 coats of My Pointe Exactly, which is lovely! I'm really not a fan of sheer polish though, so I'll probably pass these up anyway, even though the combination you showed us makes it tempting!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am not usually a fan of pastels, but these look so delicate and romantic that I am really tempted to try them.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Right now I'm really into milky shades (it looks like they are reading my mind!!!!) and I would love to have all of them :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I like your swatches but i'm not a huge fan of the ollection in itself

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love all the names of these! But they seem too sheer for me. Too bad, if they actually came out opaque I'd want almost all the colors.
